Training Analyst Appointment Process: Myths and Realities

Sunday April 30th

1 pm to 3 pm EST. via ZOOM

This webinar is limited to graduate adult and child analysts of AAPE Institutes. The focus will be on a discussion of the complexities of the TA/SA appointment process. Representatives of two AAPE Institutes will present their approaches to the processes of Adult TA/SA appointment and Child SA appointment, and one recently appointed adult TA/SA will discuss her experience of this process. The remainder of the webinar will be devoted to brainstorming among those in attendance.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will identify two key elements of assessment of applicants for adult TA/SA positions.
  2. Participants will identify two elements specific to assessment of applicants for child SA positions.

Ronald M. Benson. M.D. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. He is the Chair of the Faculty Selection Committee that oversees the review and appointment of TAs/SAs at MPI. He is a former chair of the Committee on Institutes and of the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the former President of the Accreditation Council for Psychoanalytic Education. In each of these roles he has reviewed TA/SA appointment procedures at many training programs at Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute (MPI).”

Stefanie Speanburg, Ph.D., LCSW, FABP, is a full-time, certified psychoanalyst in private practice. As a career psychoanalyst, she achieved Supervising Analyst and Psychoanalyst-of- Candidates qualifications a few years following graduation. She teaches Comparative Contemporary Psychoanalytic Theories and Practice in adjunct faculty roles at Emory University Laney Graduate School, Smith School for Social Work, Georgia Medical College at Augusta, the Emory University Department of Behavioral Health and Sciences Residency Program, and the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute (EUPI). You might recognize her name as the EUPI Director, but don’t let the administrative title mislead you- she shares most of her working hours with patients and supervisees.

Dr. McGehee is a Training and Supervising Analyst for Children, Adolescents and Adults at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. Currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, he is the past Director of the Denver Institute and past President of the Denver Psychoanalytic Society. Currently, he is the Secretary of the AAPE, Councilor for the ACP and Co-Director of the Western Consortium for Child Psychoanalysis.
